Artist Biography
I am American by birth but came to England in the 70’s and stayed to make my life here. I moved from London to Ditchingham, Norfolk in 2013 and work from a studio in my garden. I paint in oils, mostly landscape or townscape.
I was a silkscreen printmaker for many years but began painting in oils in about 2006. My years of printmaking have informed my work as a painter, but I was glad to break free from the limitations of a very technical medium, and I enjoy the subtlety and variation achievable in paint.
My style is unashamedly realistic, but always – I hope – slightly unconventional. My subject matter is from the real world around me. What interests me most is the fall of light and shadow on things.
I enjoy the challenge of painting outdoors, but only when there is sunlight and shadow to paint. And sometimes that perfect combination of light and shade is so fleeting that I have to capture it with a camera and work it up into a pleasing composition back in my studio.
I have exhibited with the New English Art Club at the Mall Galleries, London. I also exhibit regularly at the Southwold Gallery, Southwold, Suffolk and the Ferini Gallery, Pakefield, Suffolk. I open by studio annually in May with the Harleston and Waveney Art Trail.
